about

"Equivalences / Synchronicities" - piano compositions & solos, experiments, by Mong-Lan.

"After listening to pianist & composer Mong Lan's new music release "Equivalences / Synchronicities," I must say I never thought I'd hear someone making such music. This hit me deep. And how! How did she pull it off? The resonate flows in my ears fell between two distinct predecessors and geniuses of piano: Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1 and Thelonious Monk's Round About Midnight. Yet at the same time, her composition is altogether entirely her own, and it's incredibly remarkable what she is doing. I immediately felt the strikes, the flows of her progressions and digressions, and the returns of deep exploratory sound structures taking all the risks, all the joys and sadness weaving simultaneously, because that's how life truly is, and Mong Lan captured it fully in the very first movement; embraced it really, and then yes, the "Equivalences / Synchronicities," which are what are always there for us to know in the world, in a manner of speaking. Mong Lan achieves this and communicates it very clearly, and with humbleness, and with precision, the full spectrum, nothing less. What a wonderful artistry and ethos of being. I could speak a volume here but it's much better for you to listen and decide for yourself. Mong Lan's approach is very direct. She turns the piano into a poet of songistry. She is a hearing eye and a seeing ear unlike anyone I have encountered. In "Equivalences / Synchronicities," it appears as though Mong Lan has decidedly and emphatically chosen compositionally to explore how sound comes into being in the first place. That's really far out to me, way far out, and great, to say the least." -- David Brinks, poet, editor, musician, historian.
